The checked bows are the detail that makes me smile. They are rather grand beneath these simple brown faces, with their pale muzzles and little curved mouths. I like the neat black and white squares beside the fluffy beige pompoms. The bears would have quite a different character without them.

Only a few small pieces make each face, so the shape of a cheek or a smile matters. I keep coming back to that combination of a plain expression and a very proper bow. There is care in it, and a little humour. A familiar teddy can still have something particular about it.
